Blake Young, president and chief executive officer of the food bank, said plans for the building began in 2008, part of a community assessment that yielded a road map for providing services to milies in the area.

The food bank started supplying food to needy milies in 1976, and over the years added social programs, including job training, home classes and high school equivalency test preparation.
Funding for the two-story center came from a loan from the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, along with county and federal grants.
In Oak Park, a red brick and concrete building has risen with a promise to help low-income and unemployed milies become financially independent.

The need is great, especially in this economy, Siefkin said. There are so many people who want a job, but if you dont have access to technology, you cant even apply for a job.
Kelly Siefkin, communications director for the food bank, said the new center was needed because demand for the food banks social services are growing and the former classrooms were overflowing.
